Adults are serious creatures. We need licenses to do things, we elect officials to do official stuff, and we have memberships to groups. Today my hubby and I went to the first of two meetings for our church's membership class. We were two out of a group of twelve perspective new members and there were two church elders who taught the class. I take my faith in Christ very seriously and this class was all about the things of the Christian faith.
We started the class by going around the room and introducing ourselves and sharing briefly when we first believed in Jesus, that he died and took the punishment for our sins. Then one of the church's elders went over the bible verses that talk about salvation. The other elder spoke on church history and what our church believes. As we were drawing to the end of the class the second elder asked if anyone had any questions. One of the ladies in the class asked something about church history. The second elder answered her question and talk a bit more. I had a question that popped into my head but I was debating if I should even bring it up. He then asked again if anyone had a question and I told myself, "Don't. Don't do it. Just keep quiet."
He then wrapped up the class and dismissed us. My husband was sitting to the right of me and to the right of him was the second elder. I leaned forward and told the man that I had a question but didn't want to ask it in front of everyone else. He gave a sweet look of concern and understanding (at this I knew I had him) and I said in all seriousness, "We have been to a lot of classes like this and in most of them they have donuts, why didn't we get donuts?"
He smiled and let out a laugh.
I don't know why but I have a dire urge to bring levity to situations that are serious. I have a hard time maintaining seriousness. It makes it hard for me to be a true adult!
Lesson: Usually I am safe to tell a joke with a guy. Women are very serious creatures and sometimes do not get my humor. But I am fortunate to know that within every man lives a boy! Boys like humor.
