Today I started my day reading a text that let me know that one of the ladies I know from the quilt shop had lost her son early that morning. It was 4:00 AM when he passed, it was expected, but he was only 32. This young man had cancer. I never met him, but I have come to be friends with his mother. I can't imagine the pain. There are no words to say that will make things better. All I know is that people need to be loved when they have lost and it is important to not shy away.
This evening I was looking on Facebook and saw pictures of an old friend with her now grown children. I dumped my old FB account last summer and started one fresh a bit later. I haven't actively pursued adding a ton of "friends" to this account, so I was pleased to get a friend request from this gal. I posted something on her timeline but didn't hear back. When I saw the photos of her and her kids I thought that they must have just had family pictures done and she wanted to share them. I then read something that I thought was saying that she lost her Mom. Then as I looked more I realized that her daughter had posted that and my old friend from high school church youth group had just passed away. It takes me days to have news like this really hit me. She was the same age as me.
Yesterday, at work I visited with a woman who lost her husband back in May. She said that he was out golfing in the morning and they were at a garden shop later in the day and he dropped dead. They tried to revive him, but she said he was gray and she knew it probably wasn't going to turn out well. The thing that has gotten to her she said was the loneliness, but she is trying to remember the good times and be thankful for them. Death separates us from the people we love.
Today's lesson: You do not know how long you or someone you love will live. Enjoy your life and theirs. Be ready to go. God made you. He is holy. You are not. That separates you from Him because you are a sinner who has broken His law. He can't dwell with sin. The payment for sin is shed blood, which is death. Your sin deserves the death penalty. Jesus is the Son of God, who came from heaven to earth to live a sinless life, to be a perfect sacrifice, to die for the payment of your sin, and who rose from the dead, and now lives forever with God the Father. Repenting from sin, turning from it to put your faith in what Jesus did to pay for your sin debt brings eternal life to you. This is about faith, not religion. This is about following God, His Word, His Son. It will change you from the inside and make you alive! This faith adopts you into God's family and you are His. This faith is the only way to be right with God who made you, and has the right and power to punish sin. This is a faith that believes in the work of Jesus and not any of your works.
